An employee of Montreal-Trudeau International Airport died on Saturday following a work accident, the airport confirmed in a press release released Sunday afternoon.
“The entire YUL airport community is in mourning today and we offer our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and colleagues,” said the airport’s president and CEO. , Philippe Rainville, in the press release.

The event occurred early Saturday afternoon, when the worker, who was in charge of baggage handling, wanted to unlock a suitcase in equipment, possibly a suitcase conveyor, explained Antoine Leclerc-Loiselle, spokesperson for the Commission for standards, equity, health and safety at work (CNESST). It was then that the worker allegedly fell.
“After that accident, there were two CNESST inspectors who went to the site to first secure the scene, then gather information on the circumstances of the accident, and also meet witnesses on site, and the people who were in charge yesterday (Saturday),” added Mr. Leclerc-Loiselle.
The CNESST inspectors asked the airport to provide them with a safe working method for this task to be accomplished, and to inform its employees. For the moment, it is forbidden for the device involved in the accident to be unlocked.
A CNESST investigation could be conducted regarding this incident. However, it remains to be determined whether the airport is under provincial or federal jurisdiction. In the second case, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada would be responsible for the investigation.
