The Israeli army is preparing to launch a major offensive against the town of Rafah, in Gaza. The inhabitants are trying to escape by all means. An Egyptian travel agency offers to leave Gaza legally, for 5,000 euros per person.
Gaza’s border with Egypt is a no-go crossing for Palestinians. Today, it can be bought at a high price. A displaced family leaves, leaving a room without a door or heating, in which they had lived for three months. She goes into exile to Egypt. “We had to pay a lot of money for the right to leave this hell”specifies Omar.
“This is the price of our lives”
From Gaza, the family contacted a travel agency in Egypt to purchase a one-way ticket to Cairo, for 5,000 euros per person. However, the average salary is 450 euros in Gaza. “We could have done a lot of things with this amount, but it is the price of our lives”, underlines Omar. The director of the travel agency is a businessman linked to Egyptian power and the intelligence services. The latter control the border with Gaza and issue crossing permits.
