“An ecological and health nonsense”, denounces Fabien Roussel

“This is not normal and it really demonstrates that we need to break with this anti-democratic and ultra-liberal Europe,” castigates Thursday, November 16 on France Bleu, in the program Ma France, Fabien Roussel, secretary general of the French Communist Party. The decision to extend the authorization of glyphosate by 10 years is “anti-democratic because Parliament said the opposite and the European Commission takes control and says the opposite of Parliament”he adds. “We must take into account all the studies that have been produced and which show that glyphosate is the cause of numerous cancers, the first victims of which are farmers”, explains the secretary general of the PCF. The WHO has also classified glyphosate as “probable carcinogen”.

Fabien Roussel understands the concerns of certain farmers who claim to have no alternative to glyphosate, “we also need to hear what farmers are saying, which is that to do without glyphosate, in certain agricultures, they need to be supported.” According to him, “this is not the case today and when this ban falls like an ax without having given our farmers the means to modify the production of their crops, it is an additional difficulty that they must face”, regrets Fabien Roussel.

Ban glyphosate in France and import products from countries that use it

The general secretary of the PCF also points out an inconsistency, because “We ban glyphosate in France and we continue to import products from countries that use glyphosate and I am thinking in particular of the agreement between the European Union and New Zealand which plans to import tens of thousands of tonnes fruits, apples in particular but also beef and mutton even though we produce them in France.

For Fabien Roussel, this observation “is ecological nonsense because these products will be transported by boats that pollute”. It is also a “health nonsense because New Zealand does not have the same regulations as us”. The solution is to “take back control of this European Union and this is also the meaning of the campaign that we are going to lead with Léon Desffontaines (head of the PCF list for the next European elections), this is the poster that the we are going to present, to regain control of the European Union on the climate, on our agriculture, our industry.”
