An earthquake felt in Outaouais

Two tremors, the last of which was the strongest, were recorded in the space of 24 hours near Lac-Simon, in Outaouais.


Saturday morning, several residents in the area testified on social networks that they were awakened by the noise and the feeling of the earth shaking.

According to Earthquakes Canada, which lists all earthquakes in the country, the tremor was officially recorded at 4:24 a.m. and had a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale. At this power, an earthquake is “often felt, but rarely causes damage,” specifies Earthquakes Canada.

The epicenter of this quake is officially located 42 kilometers north-northeast of Buckingham, a suburb of Gatineau, and its focus is 18 km below the Earth’s surface.

It occurred barely 24 hours after another slight earthquake was recorded, still in the Lac-Simon sector.

This latest tremor occurred at 4:55 a.m. Friday morning and was only 1.7 on the Richter scale, a strength at which they are not usually felt.

Its epicenter was located 5 km northwest of Notre-Dame-de-Pontmain, and its focus is also 18 km below the Earth’s surface.
