An avalanche of parcels at the main sorting center of La Poste in the Dordogne

The great season for parcels has started at the Post Office. At the Marsac-sur-l’Isle sorting center, which distributes two-thirds of the inhabitants of the Dordogne, the number of packages doubled in the last week of November: some 20,000 packages have to be sorted each night, compared to 10,000 in normal times, and the Post office must employ temporary workers. About thirty people come to reinforce the 300 post office workers of Marsac and auxiliary depots.

The number of packages has already climbed by more than a third since containment

This 10% reinforcement is sufficient thanks to a reorganization initiated with the rise of online sales. At the Marsac Post distribution center, the number of daily parcels has already fallen from around 6,000 to 10,000 over the past two years. La Poste has therefore installed a new machine to sort packages delivered overnight, and “special parcel” postmen come to relieve their colleagues of ordinary rounds. In the agglomeration of Périgueux for example, 6 postmen (and even 8 before Christmas) only distribute parcels, to ease the rounds of around fifty colleagues. This new sorting organization in the Dordogne makes it possible to distribute more than 30,000 parcels per day, and this peak will perhaps be reached during the week before Christmas.
