An “attack” leaves two dead by firearm in Brussels

Two people were killed by gunfire early Monday evening in Brussels. The suspect is on the run. The federal prosecutor’s office responsible for terrorism cases was contacted shortly after, a spokesperson told AFP.

The victims of this “attack” would be Swedes, according to a publication on X by the Belgian Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo.

A video claiming responsibility for the double murder, in which a man speaks in Arabic, was circulating Monday evening on social networks, according to a source close to the case.

According to a video posted on the website of the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuwsthe shooter in a fluorescent orange jacket who was riding a scooter fled after using an automatic weapon, which he shouldered to fire at least four shots.

The federal prosecutor’s office in charge of terrorism cases, for its part, is carrying out checks on possible terrorist motivation.

The events occurred near Place Sainctelette, in the northern districts of the Belgian capital.

The police were alerted shortly after 7:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. in Quebec).

A security perimeter has been installed.
