A little before 8 a.m. on Monday July 10, an individual attacked a kindergarten in Lianjiang, southern China. The toll is heavy: six dead and one injured, according to the municipality, including “one teacher, two parents and three students”. A 25-year-old suspect has been arrested, local police said. But the authorities could not detail the profiles of the victims or specify what type of weapons were used. While China prohibits the possession of firearms to its citizens, stabbing attacks have multiplied in recent years.

This is not the first time that a school has been targeted. In August 2022, three people died and six others were injured in a knife attack, again on a kindergarten in Jiangxi province. A year earlier, an individual armed with a knife killed two children in Beiliu, in the south of the country, and injured 16 other people. These attacks on schools have led the Chinese authorities to tighten security around schools.
