Food waste: a farmer from Ariège makes money by promoting local products in her grocery store

In Ariège, Christelle has found a way to make the produce from local farms profitable by selling it in her grocery store. “A no-brainer” for this daughter of farmers, who has taken over the family farm.

According to a new study, each person throws an average of one meal per week in the trash, or 157 euros. But there are solutions to buy less and stop wasting. In Ariège, with her caravan, which has just been named “best grocery store in France”, Christelle promotes short circuits to put the emphasis back on the essentials. In the twenty square meters of her shop, we find a concentrate of local products: “dairy products, yogurts, jams, honey, biscuits”, she lists, but also wine.

Her 1,600 products come from farms and artisans in the region. Everything is made within a 60-kilometer radius. Products that she tastes herself.

Daughter of farmers, Christelle took over her parents’ farm. She raises 40 cows and their calves, and intends to promote her products, like those of the surrounding farms. “Having a place to sell our products […] It’s obvious, we’re cramped everywhere”she comments. In total, 140 producers supply her business. She knows them all. Her shop is open 7 days a week.

In Bayonne (Basque Country), the short circuit is also a success. Seven farmers have joined forces to create their own supermarket. It is supplied by around a hundred Basque farms.
