A twerk workshop, a dance that requires moving the hips, buttocks and pelvis, is offered to men at the Barcelona erotica fair. An initiative of “Plural”, a social action center dedicated to masculinities created in the Catalan capital… Extract from the magazine “We, the Europeans” of September 1, 2022.
Krizia Nardini has a doctorate in anthropology and, in the fall of 2022, she will be one of the speakers in the “Plural” program in Barcelona, which aims to deconstruct the shackles of masculinity. To this end, she proposes a method that she designed around a provocative dance, the twerk. That day, she demonstrated at the erotic fair held in the capital of Catalonia. A universe often accused of conveying sexist clichés.
Even if it is not visible at first sight, recently, this fair wants to be educational. Krizia Nardini’s intervention is scheduled for 5 p.m. Three men are in the room but two of them will prefer to remain spectators. Only Eduardo will agree to participate in the experiment: to engage in a practice usually reserved for women.
“You have to free yourself. Free yourself, that’s all”
“The man has the right to move his pelvis only once, in bed, during the sexual act, with the movement back and forth. It’s very reductive. It’s this which is called ‘coito-centrism’. As a result, the pleasure of moving the pelvis, all the sensual energy of the pelvis, the man does not have access to it. It is not possible in current standards”explains the anthropologist and activist.
The young woman’s conviction is that men must learn to let go, and dancing is a good way to make them understand. So, what did Eduardo understand by participating in this twerking workshop? “You have to free yourself. Free yourself, that’s all”, he said to the magazine “We the Europeans” (replay). Breaking free from the norms of masculinity is no small feat, even for those who are now convinced of it…
