On the war memorial in the village of Cruet (Savoie), he was Mr. X, an anonymous victim among the eight shot on June 8, 44. 79 years later, he finds a name and a face. Robert Rosengarten had until then been forgotten by history. During all these years, they carried out a real investigation. A photo changed everything. We see a man wearing a watch and a signet ring, these are the ones that are found on the body of Mr. X.
“We gave him back his identity”
Monsieur X now has a name, Robert Rosengarten. He was Jewish and had fled Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) to take refuge in Savoy. On June 8, 1944, we know that he was riding a bicycle. He was then arrested by the Germans, on the road, along with a group of resistance fighters. The name of Robert Rosengarten has found a place among those shot in the village of Cruet. “We gave him back his identity, a second life. It’s just incredible”assures Denise Cunit, a member of the Cruet Nature et Patrimoines association.
