A tattoo robot capable of an unprecedented level of precision, launched by the start-up Blackdot in Austin, United States. (Blackdot)

In the coming weeks, the first store of the start-up Blackdot will open. It will be in Austin in the United States. As usual we will start by choosing a drawing or a work by an artist from a catalog. But then, instead of going under the needle of the tattoo master. We will place you under an articulated arm. With at the end, a sort of printer with dozens of micro-needles which will inject the ink under your skin.

VSIt remains a real tattoo: you pierce the skin, it hurts and it’s permanent. Except that it is no longer a human being, but a machine that does the work. Artists are already offering tattoo models compatible with this new tattoo robot, such as Tyler Hobbs.

The needles are the size of a hair. We can achieve a new level of precision. With tiny tattoos full of details that are almost impossible to do by hand. It is no coincidence that tattoos are often very large. That’s because it’s easier to do.

The promise of this machine is therefore to guarantee that whatever the complexity of the design, it will always be reproduced identically with impeccable quality. The objective is even to create a new economic model where any artist could offer their work in the form of a tattoo. All with traceability that would allow the creation of limited editions or exclusive designs that you are sure to be the only one to own.

One in five French people is tattooed

The tattoo market has exploded in recent years. It is now estimated at nearly two billion euros. So obviously, this attracts technology start-ups. More and more French people are tattooed: one in five according to the latest statistics. In the United States, it’s even more: one in three Americans. Tattooing has therefore almost won the battle for social acceptance. Today, we have temporary inks. We seek to avoid unpleasant surprises with robots. Many people fear pain or are simply afraid of needles. And this remains one of the main obstacles to tattooing, obviously always with the image it sends.
