This Wednesday, April 13, 2022, Odette Joassaint, 41, was arrested by Miami police for the murder of her two children aged 5 and 3. The mother has been charged with first-degree murder and jailed in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The facts would have taken place on the evening of Tuesday, April 12. During her interrogation, Odette Joassaint notably explained to the investigators that “ the children suffered and that they would suffer less if they were dead “, reports the Miami Herald. She also reportedly asked detectives to ” pick them up because she didn’t want any more.
An “unstable” woman
The two children were declared dead at the scene of the crime after the intervention of the emergency services which tried to resuscitate them, in vain. The arrest report, obtained by our American colleagues, indicates that the mother allegedly told the police that she tied the arms, legs and necks of her children to the bed before strangling them using a ribbon. Michael Vega, spokesperson for the Miami police, affirms, in the columns of the Miami Herald, that Odette Joassaint was hysterical and furious. According to the police, she also confided that she was facing serious financial problems.
Separated from the mother of his children, the father of the victims, Frantzy Belval, confided that Odette Joassaint had obtained custody of his daughter and son after their separation. He still saw his offspring at least once a week, usually on Saturdays. According to him, his ex-wife was ” unstable and hadn’t worked for over a year.
