Chinese leader Xi Jinping will be given a third term at the Chinese Communist Party Congress on Sunday, October 16. In his speech, he affirmed the great ambitions of his country, which dreams of being the first world power, despite the weaknesses of its regime.
The twentieth congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Sunday, October 16, will be the coronation of Xi Jinping. He is preparing to be reappointed for an unprecedented third term, while the constitution limited the duration of the presidential term. Xi Jinping had it modified, to remain for life if he wishes. In China, the party and its 96 million members control everything. Every five years, behind closed doors, the party-state appoints its governing bodies. At the top, a standing committee, known as “the gang of seven”. All the leaders chosen this week should be close to Xi Jinping.
The one who is nicknamed “the red emperor” will remain party secretary, president of the Republic, chairman of the military commission, central leader and, perhaps, guide of the people – a novelty. He rose through the ranks of the party step by step, before taking over in 2012, at the age of 59, the head of the party. A period marked by the arrest of former ministers and generals then began. Civil servants also fall, by the thousands, in the name of the fight against corruption. Civil society, too, is muzzled. Covid, United States, Taiwan: many sensitive issues still stand in its way of achieving the stated objective of making China the world’s leading power by 2049.
