Author, composer and performer, but also journalist for six years, Juliette Armanet finally devoted herself to music, following in the footsteps of her father, composer and jazz pianist. His second album, “Burn the fire“, was released last Friday.
franceinfo: The French public discovered you with your first album, Girlfriend, released in 2017. On your new album we feel a real letting go, something that you were not necessarily ready to do when you debut?
I was ready for something else. The first album was a step towards my music, towards the public. There is another margin, another woman. It’s a liberation record, it’s generous, abundant, with strings, brass … It’s shimmering as an album. I allowed myself a bit of everything, in any case I had fun doing it. The fact that I did a lot of stage opened me up, blossomed me too.
The public adopted you from the start. We feel that it touched you, because it was a turning point in your life.
This is what gave me confidence in myself, in my music. I also really learned to sing on stage.

Was it difficult to write those words sometimes, to sing them, to deliver them?
I’m not going to lie, this album was complicated to make because I wanted an ambitious album, but we had to get back in the saddle, I finished the tour of the first very pregnant. Sometimes success can also weaken. I got out of this tour a bit rushed, then I welcomed a child, you have to get back then with your notebook and pencil! I wanted to throw myself into the void, hand myself a mirror, and say to myself “Who am I after all this?”
You love life, is that why this album defines you?
Yes, I’m a passionate person, that’s why I chose my title Burn the fire, because there is something very ardent in this album, a little dangerous, which had been there in me for a few years, and which only asked to be revealed.

I feel like singing a lot has taught me how to deploy myself. And besides on this disc when we recorded the vocals, my producer told me that we had to change the microphone compared to the first album, not because I lost something, but that I am no longer there. same woman, I no longer have the same voice. We have the voice of his life.
Are there a lot of your parents in this album too, what they gave you, transmitted?
It is true that I, who am now a mother, wonder if I will be able to transmit music to my son. I have the impression that passions are sometimes very natural, when you are in a family where there is music from morning to night, it fits. But it is true that they succeeded in this transmission in a very flexible, very beautiful way, and I hope to succeed in doing the same.
Finally, a title from this album is called Save my life, did music save you?
Believe it or not, but yes. I believe that in recent years, thanks to music, I have been able to do me good, tame me, have fun too. And sometimes having fun saves your life a bit.
