European Union: an agreement worth 7.4 billion euros was signed with Egypt
(FRANCEINFO)
On Sunday March 17, the European Union and Egypt signed a 7.4 billion euro agreement based on immigration, as well as energy.
7.4 billion euros from the European taxpayer was awarded to Egypt – one of the lowest ranked countries for the rule of law according to the World Justice Project – on Sunday March 17. Loans, investments, aid for migration programs, these are the areas covered by this agreement. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, welcomes this “historic milestone“and welcomes the signature of a”joint declaration for a strategic and global partnership“.
A deal that makes one cringe
The migration aspect of the agreement resembles that signed in July with Tunisia. Europeans expect migrants’ countries of origin or transit to stop departures and return those in an irregular situation to their soil. A scandal according to the NGOs. Human Rights Watch accuses Europeans of seeking to arrest migrants and ignoring abuses, while Refugees platform in Egypt accuses Brussels of subcontracting to Cairo the restriction of the freedom of movement of migrants.
