After 13 days of negotiations, an agreement was reached at the end of COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Wednesday December 13. A text mentions the transition towards the end of fossil fuels. Europeans, and in particular France, welcome this agreement. However, there is no question of speeding up in the text. The goal is set for 2050, but for some, action should be taken now.

Gas used as transition energy

“It’s very difficult to make people understand that what we are going to emit between now and 2030 is essential for the climate after 2050”, explains Jean Jouzel, co-author of the IPCC and climate specialist at the UN. Faced with the emergency, it is not a question of immediately exiting fossil fuels, but of moving away from them. Young activists regret the use of gas as transition energy. However, this agreement remains unprecedented. For the first time in the history of climate conferences, a text includes coal, but also gas and oil.
