An agreement in principle at Fantasia, a few days before the start of the festival

Unionized employees and management of the Fantasia film festival reached an agreement in principle Friday evening, the CSN announced on DutyThe agreement comes just days before the start of the festival, which will take place from July 18 to August 4 in Montreal.

“We are proud of the dedication and determination of the members in the negotiation process,” union member Théa Trudeau-Tremblay said in an email. “The employer has acknowledged our mobilization and has been open about our latest submission. We are excited to submit the tentative agreement to the members at our next general meeting.”

On Thursday, the festival’s sixty or so unionized workers held a one-day strike to increase pressure on the employer. Employment status and wages were the main sticking points at the negotiating table. The details of the agreement will not be known until after the members vote.

On Wednesday, Fantasia CEO Pierre Corbeil was optimistic about the possibility of reaching an agreement at the meeting with workers scheduled for two days later. He said he was open to offering employee status to contract self-employed workers, but stated that “we don’t fully agree on the hourly rates for the different positions.”
