MONTREAL | A translator who launched a petition to protect French in Montreal will be a candidate for the Parti Québécois in Mercier, has learned The newspaper.
Sabrina Mercier-Ullhorn will run for the independence party in the Montreal riding in the October 3 election.
The voters of Mercier chose Ruba Ghazal as their MP in 2018 and have only elected candidates from Québec solidaire since 2008. For the previous 42 years, the county was a PQ stronghold.
Mme Mercier-Ullhorn, 31, holds a master’s degree in translation studies from Concordia University. She has been involved in various PQ bodies since 2019.
The candidate was one of three spokespersons for Accent Montreal, an organization that launched a petition in 2020 asking the City of Montreal to take action to reverse the decline of French in Montreal. This petition now has more than 18,000 signatures.
“To present myself for the Parti Québécois is for me the logical and normal continuation of my commitment, reacted Mme Mercier-Ullhorn yesterday. Moreover, I believe that the best way to ensure real sustainability for our language, and to stop having a purely defensive posture, is to give us a country. »
