Rising water levels: an action plan will be designed on a case-by-case basis for 500 municipalities
(France 2)
Rising waters threaten hundreds of thousands of homes. A study center mandated by the government has identified 500 municipalities for which an action plan will be designed on a case-by-case basis.
Hundreds of thousands of homes are threatened by rising waters. The equivalent of a football field disappears every week in France, due to the progression of the oceans, according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition. In 2050, 6,500 homes could disappear, according to the Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, Environment, Mobility and Development (Cerema). In 2100, this could concern more than 500,000 homes and business premises. By this time, departments such as Nord, Seine-Maritime or Vendée could be the most affected.
Natural phenomena that repeat and intensify
France is particularly vulnerable to the retreat of the coastline, in particular because of natural phenomena which repeat and intensify: waves-submersion, storms and winds. The study center mandated by the government has identified 500 municipalities for which an action plan will be designed on a case-by-case basis. Compensation and land rehousing schemes are also being considered.
