An accident postpones the start of the British Grand Prix

The British Grand Prix, the 10th round of the Formula 1 championship, was interrupted on Sunday moments after the start due to an accident involving several drivers.

According to the first images, near the first corner, the single-seaters of Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri), George Russell (Mercedes) and Guanyu Zhou (Alfa-Romeo) came into contact.

Guanyu Zhou’s single-seater turned around to finish its race on the other side of the safety barriers against the fences separating the track from the spectators.

The Thai Alexander Albon (Williams) and the French Esteban Ocon (Alpine) were also indirectly involved in the accident. The Williams was sent against the barriers as it tried to slow down.

According to information from the International Automobile Federation (FIA), “emergency teams intervened immediately and the drivers of car 23 (Albon) and car 24 (Zhou) were taken to the medical center”.

“The two pilots were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical center” is it also indicated.

Following this accident, the other drivers returned to the pits. The race will resume shortly before 4:00 p.m. local time (11:00 a.m. Montreal time).

From the first laps, Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) overtook Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) but the race will resume in the order established during qualifying.

Sainz will therefore start first again, ahead of Verstappen and his teammate at Ferrari Charles Leclerc.

Moreover, after the red flag, several people tried to enter the track.

“These people were immediately removed and the matter is now being handled by local authorities,” the FIA told reporters.
