The toll has been heavy since the first strikes on Gaza, with, on Sunday October 8, more than 300 dead and thousands injured. Air raids are increasing, and Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements suggest that other, larger operations are imminent.

All that remains is a field of ruins, a pile of rubble. In the heart of Gaza City, a tower was blown away by one of the Israeli strikes. “It was a terrible state of panic. Frankly, even I, the man of the family, was running in circles because I was so terrified and distraught”, confides a father, who only had a few moments to flee. A man ran a coffee shop at the top of the building. “There were journalists’ offices, lawyers’ offices, doctors’ surgeries, and my restaurant on the roof terrace. Nothing justifies this bombing. I don’t understand”he said.

Between despair and anger

In the aftermath of Hamas’ attack on Israel, Palestinians expect the worst. Some leave their neighborhoods towards schools run by the United Nations for shelter. Already more than 20,000 refugees, according to Adnan abu Hasan, spokesperson for the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees. “We expect the numbers to increase”, he said. Gazans oscillate between despair and anger. “I have 15 people in my care between my children and my grandchildren. Who will help me, who will take care of us?”asks a woman.
