The Franco-Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf was elected permanent secretary of the French Academy on Thursday, succeeding Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, who died in August, a member of the institution’s administrative commission told AFP.
He was elected by 24 votes to 8 for his competitor and friend, the writer Jean-Christophe Rufin, according to the same source.
