(Washington) The nebula of “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” groups is at the origin of the attack which killed three American soldiers on Sunday in Jordan, a White House spokesperson said on Wednesday.
“Our intelligence services are confident that [cette attaque] was carried out by a grouping called Islamic Resistance in Iraq”, a nebula of fighters from pro-Iran armed groups, declared the spokesperson for the National Security Council, John Kirby, during a press conference.
This grouping “includes” the Hezbollah Brigades, he noted, specifying that the deadly attack “certainly bore the mark” of this influential pro-Iran armed group in Iraq. But he did not go so far as to specifically attribute responsibility for the attack to the Hezbollah Brigades, which announced on Tuesday “suspend” their military operations against American forces.
The drone attack on Sunday targeted an American logistics base located in the middle of the Jordanian desert, on the border with Iraq and Syria. It left three dead and several dozen injured, according to the American army.
On Tuesday, John Kirby said it was “possible” that the United States would respond to this attack in a “graduated” manner, with “potentially multiple actions.”
The United States has suffered numerous strikes against positions in the Middle East since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, but had not reported any human losses during an attack until Sunday.
