American singer Eric Carmen, author and first performer of the song “All by Myself”, has died

His song “All by Myself” was covered by Céline Dion and Frank Sinatra. Eric Carmen also sang “Hungry Eyes”, from the soundtrack of the film “Dirty Dancing”.

American singer Eric Carmen, known for having written and performed the global hit All by Myselfdied at the age of 74, announced Tuesday March 12 his wife Amy Carmen, who did not specify where this death occurred or its cause.

“Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep this weekend. He was very happy to know that for decades his music touched so many people and will always be remembered by them.”, she wrote in a message posted on the artist’s official website. Amy Carmen also asked fans to “respect the family’s privacy as we grieve our enormous loss”.

Co-founder of the Raspberries

Born in 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio, Eric Carmen began his musical career by co-founding the rock group The Raspberries in the 1970s, which broke up five years later. The band’s first album featured a raspberry-scented scratch-and-sniff sticker.

The group reformed in 2004. A concert from this tour was the subject of an album, released in 2017, entitled Raspberries Pop Art Live.

The singer is best known for being the author, co-composer (melody borrowed from Rachmaninov) and performer of the hit All by Myself in 1975 and the interpreter of Hungry Eyestaken from the soundtrack of the very popular film Dirty Dancing (1987), with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. His song Almost Paradisewhich he co-wrote for the film Footlooseearned him a Grammy nomination.

His hits have been covered by artists as varied as Céline Dion and Frank Sinatra (All by Myself), Shaun Cassidy (That’s Rock ‘n Roll) or John Travolta (Never Gonna Fall in Love Again).
