The American University Columbia (New York) postponed, on the night of Thursday April 25 to Friday April 26, the deadline set for students to evacuate the campus, occupied to protest against the war in Gaza. The office of the president of the New York university, from which the pro-Palestinian support movement in universities started, returned to the deadline of midnight, local time, to dismantle a tent village set up by 200 students.
“Negotiations have progressed and are continuing as planned”affirmed the office of the president of the university. “We have our demands, they have theirs”he added, denying having requested police intervention.
Harvard, Yale and Princeton mobilized
The pro-Palestinian student movement, which has become widespread in American universities, was born on this New York campus a week earlier. Dozens of arrests were made there after Columbia officials asked police to end the protest, accused by several figures of stoking anti-Semitism. However, the mobilization resumed on Wednesday on campus.
Some of the most prestigious universities in the world, such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton, are affected by this movement of American students. More than 200 protesters were arrested Wednesday and Thursday in Los Angeles (California), Boston (Massachussetts) and Austin (Texas), where 2,000 people gathered again on Thursday.
