While she seemed rather to take it easy lately alongside her two children, Amelia Mauresmo is going to have to change the pace of life quite drastically in the coming weeks. Legend of French tennis with her two Grand Slam victories in Australia and Wimbledon, the 42-year-old former tenniswoman has managed her sporting career very well. Alternately coaches some of the best players on the planet, from Andy Murray to Lucas Pouille, she has just been appointed to an extremely coveted position.
It was the president of the French Tennis Federation (FFT) Gilles Moretton who announced it this morning: Amélie Mauresmo becomes this Thursday director of Roland-Garros! “We are very happy to announce that Amélie Mauresmo will be the new director of Roland-Garros at least until 2024”, he informed during a press conference. Visibly moved and happy, the young mother said to herself “honored” for having been chosen to occupy such an important position for French tennis. “I would be up to it”, she said, indicating that it was a great “pride” for her to access these prestigious positions.
Guy Forget ousted last Tuesday
And for Amélie Mauresmo to be chosen, it took a significant departure, that of Guy Forget, who held the post before her. The 56-year-old former tennis player, at the end of his contract, has left his post as tournament director for Roland-Garros and the Masters 1000 in Paris, FFT announced on Tuesday. If the reasons for his departure were not specified, his replacement was quickly found by the Federation. Moreover, according to L’Équipe, Guy Forget would have handed in his resignation to Gilles Moretton last Tuesday morning.
This is excellent news for Amélie Mauresmo and all her fans therefore, since after a brilliant career as a player, a very good stage as a coach, she now occupies one of the most coveted positions in tennis!
