AMD unveils new AI chips to compete with Nvidia

(Taipei) Taiwanese chipmaker AMD on Monday announced new artificial intelligence (AI) chips targeting everything from data centers to advanced laptops to compete with Nvidia, the undisputed market leader.

Over the past two years, demand for these specialized processors to develop, train and run AI applications such as ChatGPT has exploded.

Despite Nvidia’s dominant position in the market, AMD has established itself as one of its most serious competitors.

“AI is our priority and we are at the start of an incredibly exciting time for the industry as AI transforms virtually every business, improves our quality of life and reshapes every part of the IT market,” said in a speech by AMD Managing Director Lisa Su, on the first day of the opening of Computex.

The show is Taiwan’s main technology showcase where semiconductor factories supply key components for many products, from iPhones to the servers that run ChatGPT.

She also announced that AMD would follow an annual update cycle for its advanced microprocessors, with the latest, the Instinct MI325X, expected to be released later this year.

The boss of Nvidia, the global electronic chip giant, Jensen Huang, did the same on Sunday, unveiling new projects and products linked to AI.

Mme Su welcomed partnerships with some of the world’s largest laptop makers, citing world leaders such as Microsoft, HP, Lenovo and Asus, which have integrated AMD’s Ryzen processors into their computers with a artificial intelligence.

Last May, Microsoft unveiled Copilot+, its new computers where its Copilot AI interface and other tools are integrated by default to help the user with all their tasks, from emails to professional meetings and personal projects.

The Windows maker’s CEO, Satya Nadella, said Monday that AMD’s Ryzen processors would be integrated into these machines.

“We are in the midst of a massive AI platform shift that promises to transform the way we live and work,” Nadella said in a video message played during Ms.me Su.

“That’s why our advanced partnership with AMD, which has expanded across multiple computing platforms, from PC to custom silicon for Xbox, and now AI, is so important to us.”
