In Brazil, deforestation has never been so intense: + 22% between August 2020 and July 2021.

Bad luck for the Brazilian forest. Just days after the close of COP26, this is an alarming new figure for the planet. In one year, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has increased by nearly 22% between August 2020 and July 2021. The largest tropical forest in the world has been deforested over 13,235 km². A record for 15 years. At the heart of the criticism, the far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro. Despite a stated policy of fighting illegal deforestation, environmental defenders accuse it of encouraging extractive activities in protected areas.

Since Jair Bolsonaro came to power, this is the third consecutive year that deforestation has increased in Brazil. Little progress: the country has committed to bringing forward, at COP26, the deadline to eliminate illegal deforestation on its soil. A goal that is still a long way off.
