Climate change is forcing the French to change their behavior. Can we, for example, always dream of a garden with a very green lawn? It requires a lot of maintenance, and a lot of water. What are the alternatives ?

To maintain an impeccable lawn, Thierry Disson spares no effort. He mows every ten days, to obtain strands between 3 and 5 cm. The list of commandments is rigorous: uprooting of thistles, destruction of weeds, and even daisies. “I like beautiful lawns, it’s a bit my pride. And it’s a bit like the setting that highlights all my plants, all my flowers and all my garden”he explains.

This model of lawn, adopted in nine out of ten gardens in France, is called into question. With climate change, it is accused of using too much water, and of not allowing time for biodiversity to develop. Solutions exist. In Aveyron, a seed producer has created a more heat-resistant variety. At 25 degrees, the grass turns yellow, but does not die. In her garden in the Paris suburbs, Carole Lecaillon stopped maintaining her lawn five years ago. She has reduced her lawn area and multiplies the islands of plants, which she lets develop at their own pace. She hardly waters anymore, has stopped using chemicals and is happy to have a garden “Fresher”.
