Following her spectacular fall on Sunday at the super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Valérie Grenier will have to be operated on twice rather than once.
The Franco-Ontarian skier revealed this on her Facebook page.
” Hello ! Update following my accident yesterday: fracture of the humerus, tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament. Shoulder surgery is scheduled here (in Innsbruck, Austria) this Wednesday, followed by knee surgery probably at home next week.
Thank you all for the support and messages you have sent me. A special mention to the first responders and my team during these difficult times.
Thank you to all of you ! »
On Sunday, Grenier seemed to be heading for another podium when the track surprised her in the last sector of the course, when she was traveling at nearly 100 km/h.
While trying to correct her trajectory to avoid a door, she was thrown into the air by compression, performing a complete spin before falling heavily onto the track. The representative of the Mont-Tremblant club slipped several dozen meters along the security fence, with the only reaction being a groan. She was evacuated by sled.
This season, Grenier has achieved six results among the top 10 in giants, including an 8e and a 6e position in Mont-Tremblant, his home station, in December. She concluded this happy streak with another victory at Kranjska Gora on January 7. She is currently ranked fifth in the giant’s rankings.
At the same time, the native of Saint-Isidore had gradually resumed speed training, competing in super-Gs when the conditions were suitable. After discussions with her coach, she decided to take part in the Cortina descent on Friday. In her first official descent in almost five years, she finished third, tied with two competitors.
