Alpine skiing | Sofia Goggia injured in training

(Milan) Star skier Sofia Goggia suffered a fall in training on Monday and was being examined for unspecified injuries, the Italian Winter Sports Federation said.

Goggia, who suffered numerous severe injuries throughout her career, clipped a post with her right leg while training in giant slalom in northern Italy, the federation said, adding that her medical commission had still not issued a health check in his case.

Goggia is the last competing athlete to have suffered a nasty fall on the slopes, after Mikaela Shiffrin, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Petra Vlhova, Alexis Pinturault and Corinne Suter, in particular.

Vlhova, the Olympic champion who fell in front of her team in Jasna, Slovakia, last month, went under the knife Monday in Switzerland to repair a torn ligament in her right knee.

“The operation was a great success,” said Vlhova’s coach, Mauro Pini, adding that “her recovery is on schedule.”

Goggia, who is 31, dominates the World Cup downhill standings with an 89-point lead over Austrian Stephanie Venier. She is also fourth in the super-G standings, and fifth in the overall World Cup standings.

Goggia also fell during a super-G presented in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2022, which led to injuries to his left knee and one leg. However, she returned to competition and won the silver medal in downhill at the Beijing Olympics 23 days later — thus expanding her collection which already included a gold medal acquired four years earlier at the PyeongChang Games, in South Korea.

Last year, in St. Moritz, Switzerland, she won a downhill race after fracturing two fingers on her left hand the day before.

His injury occurs almost two years before the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games, which will take place on February 6, 2026.

Last week, Goggia finished fifth at the Kronplatz Alpine resort. It was his best result in giant slalom in more than six years. She has 24 career victories on the Alpine Ski World Cup circuit.
