Alpine skiing | Seriously injured in February, Sofia Goggia still aims to return next winter

(Rome) Italian skier Sofia Goggia, who suffered a serious injury in early February, will not train in the southern hemisphere in Argentina, but is still aiming to return to the circuit this winter, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) announced on Monday.

“Sofia Goggia will not take part in the training camp on the Argentinian snows of Ushuaia that the other members of the team have been attending for a few days,” FISI said.

“She has decided to have the devices put in place on February 5 removed to reduce her double tibia-malleolus fracture” of her right leg, the press release continues.

“The operation went perfectly […] and Sofia Goggia will resume preparations for the 2024-2025 World Cup season in the coming days,” FISI concluded.

Goggia, 31, resumed training on the snow this summer, but according to the trade press, was feeling pain at the points of contact between his ski boot and his operated right leg.

The 2018 Olympic downhill champion and 2022 Olympic vice-champion, four-time winner of the small downhill globe (2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023), was injured during giant slalom training, a discipline she wanted to focus on last winter.

The 2024-25 season will kick off on October 26 in Sölden, Austria, with a giant slalom. The first downhill of the winter is scheduled for mid-December in Beaver Creek, USA.
