Alpine skiing | Mikaela Shiffrin sets record with over $1 million in scholarships

(Oberhofen) Mikaela Shiffrin made World Cup history again by becoming the first alpine skier to cross the US$1 million mark in scholarships.

Shiffrin’s victory in Sunday’s giant slalom was his 13e since October and has increased its total purses this season to 964,200 Swiss francs, or 1.04 million US.

This sets a new mark in alpine skiing and put him ahead of Marco Odermatt, whose giant slalom victory on Saturday in his final race of the season lifted his purse to 1.017 million.

This amount is also a new mark among men. The former mark of $724,000 had been held by Marcel Hirscher since the 2017-18 season.

In 2018-19, Shiffrin’s best purse season so far, she raked in $958,000. She had also won the crystal globe in the general classification that season, which the American achieved again this winter, for the fifth time.

This historic season on the World Cup circuit saw the 28-year-old add to his record with an 88e victory, including a 21e in giant slalom, which is also a trademark of the Grand Cirque blanc.

Her purse total was almost three times that of her closest rival, Sofia Goggia, who won $365,000, thanks in part to five gold medals in the downhill.

On the men’s side Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Shiffrin’s spouse, followed Odermatt in the top prize money rankings with $673,000 in earnings.
