Alpine skiing | “I would love to compete in the downhill”, assures Mikaela Shiffrin

(Yanqing) American Mikaela Shiffrin, in difficulty at the Beijing Games, said she wanted to take part in the downhill, after the first official training session on Saturday.

“I haven’t decided yet. I would love to race the downhill, today’s practice took me a step in that direction,” Shiffrin said in the mixed zone.

The American, one of the greatest skiers of all time (Olympic slalom champion in 2014 and giant slalom in 2018), completely missed the start of her Olympic Games with two runs off the track in giant and slalom, then a 9and place on the super-G on Friday. She should therefore take part in the descent on Tuesday, not her specialty, then in the combined two days later where she is one of the favorites.

“We’ll see how things develop these days, there are sections of this track where the real speed specialists are going to excel and improve day by day. I don’t know yet where and how I can improve. But I felt solid on the skis”, she added after her discovery of the new track “The Rock”.

About her two outings, very unexpected for this usually implacable skier, the 26-year-old American felt that they “sort of took the pressure off her, since it is difficult to do worse from one sporting point of view. »
