Alphonso Davies returns to the pitch

Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies played his first match since December 17, after recovering from heart problems caused by COVID-19.

On Wednesday in Spain, his Bayern Munich lost surprisingly against Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

After contracting COVID-19, the 21-year-old developed symptoms of myocarditis, which kept him away from soccer fields. Davies has missed Canada’s last six games in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

The Maple Leaf went 4-2-0 in his absence, finishing atop the CONCACAF group and earning his ticket to Qatar. In seven games, the fast defender has collected a goal and three assists.

Davies was in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting squad and played all 90 minutes against Villarreal. The latter opened the scoring in the eighth minute and never looked back to win 1-0.

Bayern, who lead the German championship, will play a Bundesliga match on Saturday before facing Villarreal again on Tuesday.
