Driven into exile by the Azerbaijani authorities, the Armenian inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh have already almost all fled the region to join Armenia. Many of them have reunited with their families there, while others are rehoused by the government.
On the road which connects the Karabakh region to Armenia, the very last cars arrive on Saturday September 30 in the morning. The flow of refugees stopped in a few hours, as told by a doctor, who has been there to help the refugees for several days. “These last four hours, we saw six cars pass“, she says. “Very old people refuse to come and give their place to younger people in the cars.“
Only a few hundred Armenians left
There would only be a few hundred Armenians left in Karabakh, or even fewer. In Goris, the first Armenian town after the Azerbaijani border, buses arrived from Stepanakert on Saturday. The drivers comfort the refugees. One of them confirms that in Stepanakert, the Azerbaijani police “was already patrolling the streets“Here, Armenians from Karabakh do not stay. They go to their families, or are relocated by the government.
