(New York) The NHL has said it has completed its investigation into the conduct of former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters.
Assistant Commissioner Bill Daly told reporters on Monday that the league had completed its investigation into Peters’ alleged racist and abusive behavior towards his players.
Akim Aliu, a black player, played for Peters when they were both with the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League over a decade ago. In November 2019, he accused his former coach of using racial slurs.
Michal Jordan, who played for Peters in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes, also alleged that Peters kicked him and punched another unidentified player during a match.
Peters resigned as head coach of the Flames over the accusations.
“The investigation is over,” Daly said at a press conference. We have been in contact with representatives of Akim (Aliu) regarding next steps, if any. There have been no recent communications in this regard, but the investigation has been concluded. ”
Aliu’s lawyer Ben Meiselas saw Daly’s statement on Twitter and wrote that neither he nor Aliu had been contacted by the NHL.
“This is news to me and it’s not true. I’m Akim’s representative and the NHL hasn’t been in contact with us for over a year, Meiselas argued. Additionally, the investigation focused on broader issues of racism that Akim experienced throughout his NHL career and they were not limited to Peters. The witnesses we told them about have not been contacted. ”
Peters showed an overall record of 199-175 with the Hurricanes and Flames during his six-year career as a head coach in the NHL.
Aliu has two goals and an assist in seven NHL games, all with the Flames. He co-founded the Alliance for Diversity in Hockey with Evander Kane in June 2020 to fight intolerance and racism in hockey.
