All competing Canadians advance to halfpipe final

The four Canadians finished in the top eight heading into the round of 16 ski cross competition at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday.

Hannah Schmidt, Maelle Thomspon, Quebecer Brittany Phelan and Courtney Hoffos respectively set the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth times of the session.

The elimination rounds will take place later Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, the three Canadians competing in Thursday’s freestyle halfpipe event confirmed their spot in the final.

Rachael Karker, Cassie Sharpe and Amy Fraser finished in the top-12 after two runs. Karker stood out with two paid runs, each of which would have allowed her to take second place in qualifying.

Sharpe and Fraser finished 6th and 11th respectively.

Also on Thursday, Canada’s men’s curling quartet lost 5-2 to Great Britain but advanced to the semifinals.

The Maple Leaf (5-4) took third place and will face Sweden (7-2) in the semifinals. In the duel between the two nations in the qualifying phase, Sweden won 7-4.

Great Britain, led by Scottish veteran Bruce Mouat, scored two points in the first end.

Brad Gushue’s team tied the game in the second end, but went no further. Great Britain scored in the fourth end and stole a point in the sixth and eighth ends.

In the duel between the two nations in the qualifying phase, Sweden won 7-4.

Also, Ontario’s Roni Remme did not finish her descent in the alpine combined and is therefore excluded from the second part of the course, the slalom.

After a great start, she fell after the second intermediate passage, which marked the end of her Olympic Games.
