The first Frenchwoman in the WTA ranking (40th) got the better of a former queen of the French Open (consecrated in 2017), Jelena Ostapenko, beaten in three sets (6-0, 1-6, 6-3 in 1h41).
The night session was not easy against an opponent who hits the ball harder than her, but her consistency was rewarded. Alizé Cornet completed the match with only five unforced errors (zero on the backhand), against 48 on the side of his opponent, who watered too much. Her ability to vary the exchanges, the reliability of her backhand and the mental toughness she showed in order not to lose her footing after the second set are all positive points to keep in mind before approaching the third round, where she will find Chinese Qinwen Zheng, who eliminated Simona Halep.
