The beautiful French adventures are over at Wimbledon. Two days after her resounding victory over world number 1 Iga Swiatek, Alizé Cornet was beaten by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the round of 16 at Wimbledon (4-6, 6-4, 6-3), Monday July 4.

Cornet had made the best start by pocketing the first set, but the Niçoise, tense throughout the meeting, and physically struggling, gradually died out. She could not resist the rise of her opponent, 44th player in the world, who will challenge Kazakh Elena Rybakina for a place in the last square. Six months after the first quarter-final of his Grand Slam career in Australia, Cornet will not repeat on the London lawn.

For her part, and almost at the same time as her compatriot, Harmony Tan could not make the weight against Amanda Anisimova (6-2, 6-3). The 115th player in the world, a great story from the first week of Wimbledon, lost heavily against the No. 20 seed. In just over an hour, the 24-year-old Frenchwoman struggled, especially in the second run. But she failed to overthrow the American, qualified for her first Grand Slam quarter.

Tan, who had never passed the second round of a Major until then, therefore stopped in the round of 16. His good career will not be rewarded with immediate progress in the WTA rankings, as no points are in fact awarded for this Wimbledon.
