Once upon a time there was a little girl aged 4e year named Alice Jubinville who rinsed milk cartons during recess so she could recycle them. Today, at 16, Alice’s heart still beats for the planet. With 10 other high school students, she wrote a manifesto on the environment, which will be presented at COP 28 in Dubai! How did all this happen? Alice answered my questions.
What is a manifesto?
It is a text in which you give your point of view on a problem and propose actions to resolve it. The authors of a manifesto want to alert people, to attract attention. The one we’re talking to you about today was created by several young people from the Lanaudière region, in Quebec. This is the initiative of the Regional Environmental Council of this region.
AS: Why did you want to participate?
Alice: Ever since I was very little, the environment has been very close to my heart. In elementary school, my best friend and I sorted trash. During recess, I would rinse all the milk cartons and then put them in the recycling bin. We set up in front of the school to give workshops on recycling.
How did the writing of the manifesto go?
Eleven students were chosen to participate in the writing. On October 20, we all got together and talked a lot, a lot, a lot in the morning. Then, we identified the subjects that seemed most important to us: water, climate, biodiversity and health. It is for these that we wanted to find solutions.
Were there any debates?
We all wanted to go in the same direction. Everyone was trying to give their ideas. When we didn’t agree, we talked about it. The manifesto doesn’t just come from one person, it really comes from everyone.
