On Wednesday, January 26, the Head of State received at the Elysee Palace returnees from Algeria to show them the recognition of France. He also called the 1962 rue d’Isly shooting “unforgivable”.

After asking for forgiveness from the Harkis in September 2021, Emmanuel Macron wanted to pay tribute to the Pieds-noirs. During a speech, Wednesday January 26 at the Élysée, the President of the Republic recognized the massacre of the street of Isly which occurred on March 26, 1962 in Algiers. He considered this act to be “unforgivable”.

On March 26, 1962, while the agreements ofEvian have been signed for a week, the Algerian War is over. However, at the call of theOAS (Secret Army Organization), 30,000 supporters of French Algeria demonstrate. At rue d’Isly, a shootout triggered by the French army left around fifty dead and hundreds injured.
