An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred on Sunday evening near Oran, the main city in western Algeria, which has hosted the Mediterranean Games since Saturday, announced the Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics ( CRAAG).
This shock, felt by the inhabitants of the wilaya prefecture, caused no casualties and the damage was minor, according to civil protection.
The earthquake occurred at 8:17 p.m. (3:17 p.m. Montreal time) 12 km north of Gdyel, about twenty kilometers east of Oran, and was followed by two aftershocks of magnitude 3.2 and 4, specified the CRAAG.
Following these tremors, houses cracked in the town of Arzew, 40 km east of the city of Oran according to civil protection.
The Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, wished, in a tweet, “peace and security” for Oran and its inhabitants, following this earthquake.
The 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games, which brings together 26 countries from the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans, began on Saturday and is due to end on July 5.
