In northern Algeria, fires killed at least 34 people. Whole villages were destroyed. Extreme heat contributes to the spread of flames.

Monday, July 24, in the early evening, the fire broke out again in the region of Béjaïa (Algeria). The fire was obviously still out of control. The fire broke out overnight from Sunday to Monday and spread at breakneck speed. Houses are quickly burnt down. The damage is considerable. “The fire started at 5 a.m., and here at 8 a.m. everything was already reduced to dust. Nothing remains”testifies a devastated resident.

Trapped tourists

Dans the region, a group of ten Algerian soldiers died, burned alive. The fire also moved closer to the coast, trapping tourists on the beach and in hotels around. A vacationer and father is appealing for help on social media. “We escaped from the residence. We managed to take refuge on a rock with my wife and my children. There is all the black smoke and the heat that are coming on us”, he explains. He was eventually rescued. The fires are devouring, in particular because of the heat wave which is raging in Algeria.
