Alfred Houget, emblematic president of Stade Rennais in the 70s, is dead

This Saturday, July 30, 2022, as Stade Rennais ends its friendly matches before the resumption of the championship, France Bleu Armorique learns of the death of Alfred Houget, at the age of 93. He was the president of the football club in the 70s and still came regularly to Roazhon Park.

Alfred Houget only remained in his post as president for two years, from 1977 to 1979, but it was he who managed the financial crisis that Stade Rennais was facing at the time. The club, in the 2nd division, had difficulty paying its players, so much so that some had even gone on strike, before a match against Lille in December 1977. Alfred Houget then took part in the creation of the 2000 cluba supporters club that funded the SRFC through donations.

It was also he who launched the first training center project and who managed to bring back star striker Laurent Pokou in 1978, to increase the club’s ticketing revenue. Honored by François Pinault, he has been honorary life president of Stade Rennais since 2015.
