The man who loved women
Katia (Juliette Delacroix) and Justine (Marica Soyer) fall in love as if by evidence. Justine offers Katia to carry their child, then leaves her pregnant. Twelve years later, Katia lives with her daughter and learns that she has a fatal disease. She turns to her brother (Alexis Michalik), then searches for Katia to ask her to tutor “their” child.
If fate seems to be beating Katia, Alexis Michalik’s dramatic sense avoids all heaviness, even slipping in humor. The fluid writing takes shape in a sober staging, while the storm roars. This story of thwarted passion, with vital consequences for Katia and fleeting ones for Justine, brings to mind Truffaut, who loved women and childhood.
The spirit of the times
Their common taste for the chronicle also brings them together. Built in two eras, A love story feels the experience, by the unfolding of the story and the accuracy of the feelings. Justine’s casualness and Katia’s disarray give way to love for her son and his role as mother. She finds the energy to find her ex-partner. All these stages, up to the overwhelming reunion are more observed than lyrical.
Alexis Michalik rings true in the emotions, he transcribes them as if he had been the spectator. Hence, perhaps, his role as brother in the film. Juliette Delacroix and Marica Soyer are in tune with a peaceful tone, while feelings are violent. Michalik is in the cast alongside young actresses and comedians from television. The film reconstructs Katia’s world with atmosphere, from her outings to her apartment as a single mother. Alexis Michalik captures the spirit of the times in a lesbian melodrama, without falling into recovery, but by building strong characters on an original story with new and nuanced emotions.
