Forward Alex Galchenyuk joined the NHL and Players Association addictions program on Tuesday.
The decision comes after the Arizona Coyotes terminated Galchenyuk’s contract following a July 9 hit-and-run arrest in Scottsdale, Ariz.
According to a police report, Galchenyuk made death threats to officers when they came to him following a traffic accident. The former Montreal Canadiens player also used racial slurs against a police officer.
Galchenyuk shared on his Twitter account his decision to join the aid program.
“By joining the NHL and Players Association assistance program, I hope to get the help that will allow me to never make a mistake like this again,” he tweeted. I’m sorry for letting you down and hope that with time and work I can show you all that I’m a much better person than was presented in that horrible moment. »
Galchenyuk is said to have contacted the police officers concerned through a letter sent by his lawyer to apologize. He apologized again on Tuesday.
In another tweet, Galchenyuk apologized to Coyotes officials, teammates and team fans.
“I couldn’t wait to start my life with my partner in Arizona, playing with some of the NHL’s best players, and putting on a show for the incredible Coyotes fan base,” it read.
