The drought and the heat prompted Météo France to place the Bouches-du-Rhône on orange alert for forest fires, Tuesday June 27. The prefecture has banned driving in five forest areas.

In Carqueiranne (Var), three hectares burned on Monday, June 26. The fire is believed to be of criminal origin. Tuesday 27, it is in the Bouches-du-Rhône that the risk was severe. Five massifs have been banned from access. In Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône), volunteers from the municipal forest fire committee criss-cross the paths, in order to do prevention. “If a fire breaks out and there are people in the middle of the massif, it is problematic for the emergency services. First of all, we will have to know where they are, how many there are, and evacuate them”explains Loïc Raoult, volunteer.

230 additional firefighters

Faced with a fire risk at the highest level, 230 additional firefighters were posted on the edge of the forest. Despite a rainy month of June in the south, the vegetation has dried up over the past few days. Wednesday, June 28, the weather looks more favorable. Only one massif in the department will remain closed to visitors.
