Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Madrid Open title on Sunday, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Jan-Lennard Struff.
The 20-year-old Spaniard, who was the favorite, therefore took a step closer to his goal of returning to the top of the ATP.
Alcaraz will once again be No. 1 if he plays at least one match at the Italian Open, starting next week.
Alcaraz converted their first match point against Struff, who is ranked 65th in the world.
The winner had a 3-2 break advantage.
The Spaniard obtained a fourth title this year, a 10th in career.
That includes remaining the champion in Barcelona in April. He also won in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells.
Alcaraz and Struff had only faced each other twice.
Struff prevailed at Roland Garros in 2021, while Alcaraz had the last laugh at Wimbledon last year.
Earlier on Sunday, Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia were crowned doubles winners, winning 6-1, 6-4 ahead of favorites Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
Azarenka and Haddad Maia brushed aside two of the three duos that made up the top three seeds, en route to a first victory in the final together.
This is a 10e double consecration for Azarenka, a fifth for Haddad Maia.
Their road to the title also included a win over Taylor Townsend and Quebec’s Leylah Fernandez.
Gauff and Pegula had triumphed in Doha and Miami earlier this year.
