A bear attack in Banff National Park, Alberta, has left two people dead, according to Parks Canada.
The agency received an alert from a GPS device in the Red Deer River valley around 8 p.m. Friday, indicating a bear attack, says Natalie Fay, external relations manager for Parks Canada in Banff.
In a statement, Mr.me Fay explains that a response team trained in wildlife attacks was immediately mobilized, but weather conditions did not permit the use of a helicopter, leading the team to travel to the scene by land overnight.
She said the team arrived at 1 a.m. and found two people dead.
According to Mme Fay, the response team encountered an aggressive grizzly bear in the area, which led Parks Canada staff to euthanize it for the safety of the public.
RCMP arrived at 5 a.m. to transport the victims to Sundre, Alberta, and the attack zone was kept closed as a safety precaution.
